The Weekly Global Roundup: Deaths And Violence In Asia (May 20 to 25, 2019)

Accidents and natural disasters led to deaths in China and India, while attacks or riots in Indonesia, Nepal, and Tajikistan left many dead as well. In China, there were strong winds and an explosion caused by a gas leak from a cargo ship, and in India there was a fire in a building. In Indonesia – following the re-election of President Joko Widodo – there were post-election riots. In Nepal, there were three separate explosions. And in Tajikistan, there was a riot by militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. Continue reading

The Weekly Global Roundup: Tragedies In Bangladesh And India (February 18 to 23, 2019)

A fire in a Bangladeshi slum killed at least 110 people, and in India at least 150 died on a tea plantation after drinking toxic bootleg liquor. In Bangladesh – where millions live in squalid slums and where a promised crackdown on building violations has fallen short – the fire also destroyed hundreds of shanty homes. And in India, in addition to the death of the workers, the collision of two Air Force jets rehearsing for an air show display left one pilot dead, and an explosion at an illegal firework factory killed at least 10 people. The Weekly Global Roundup: Busy Week For President Donald Trump (December 17 to 22, 2018)

President Donald Trump and his administration had a busy week: In response to the Las Vegas shooting last year, the sale of bump stocks is now banned; the Senate passed a sweeping, bipartisan criminal justice bill; and the Trump Foundation agreed to dissolve, after New York’s attorney general filed a lawsuit against it for violations of federal and state laws. Mr. Trump also declared an end to the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, in Syria, prompting the resignation of Defence Secretary James Mattis. Continue reading
