Adult Volunteers In Singapore: Encouraging Figures, But More Can Be Done

This is part of my month-long “Brevity is Clarity” endeavour, inspired by a friend’s Facebook post (here) which reminded me of the importance of getting points across cleanly and clearly. 160 words, 5 points, 1 issue. Check out the complete collection (here).

This is great news, because these (to-be) parents are in a prime position to influence children to engage in volunteerism or community service.

1. The 2012 Individual Giving Survey by the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre (NVPC) presents encouraging figures: overall volunteer participation has risen from 23.3% to 32.3% (1 of 3 volunteered occasionally), and the increase was most significant for those aged 35 to 44 (at 42%, just 1% behind those aged 15 to 24).

2. This is great news, because these (to-be) parents – not compelled by school programmes –are in a prime position to influence children to engage in volunteerism or community service.

3. Beyond the quantitative figures, I wanted more details (for instance, how many are parent volunteers, as well as their motivations). Feedback and reflection are equally important, to determine the lessons learnt from the experiences.

4. On a more positive note, passionate individuals – and their stories – could be highlighted, to serve as inspiration for their counterparts. This could then function as healthy peer pressure.

5. Voluntary organisations should recognise the value of structured-flexible plans, allowing more to transition from occasional to regular volunteers.
